About the artist

About Mae Gray also known as her brand name Taxidermae.

Hi I'm Mae!

I am a Scottish artist who is inspired by the beauty of life & death. I specialise in combining 3D natural materials like bone or antler with intricate hand-drawn graphite art. I am a proud member of the 'Vulture Culture' community & I consider myself an environmentalist at heart. My idol since childhood is Sir David Attenborough, inspiring me to live sustainably and mindfully.

My artform is a way to give animals a second chance to be respected and admired by the world. It's a journey of confronting childhood fears of death and finding beauty in the unexpected. Think 'Memento Mori' – a blend of life's vitality and the gentle embrace of mortality.

Through each piece, I aim to stir emotions and spark conversations. You'll find plenty of symbolism and medieval flair in my work, each piece containing a story. In essence, my art is a love letter to nature and its enduring spirit. Join me in celebrating the wild, the weird, and the wonderfully alive (or dead!)

  • Personal morals

I do not kill anything for my artwork. Most of my natural specimens are from old collections or locally sourced (found deceased) & I do not bleach or use harsh chemicals. I am an avid vintage collector, pro-fur supporter & I am pro-hunting for population & conservation. I am pro-LGBTQ+ & my pronouns are she/her. None of my artwork is created with the help of AI :)

  • Commitment to sustainability

Packaging materials are recycled or compostible when possible. Taxidermae is ran by one individual with most products printed and packaged by me.

Any print-on-demand products are EU or US based. Making products on demand instead of in bulk helps reduce overproduction & allows my international customers a lower emission purchase.
